Bikramashil Mahavihar (Thabahi)
Bikramashil Mahavihar was one of the major Buddhist study centers of Nepal. The famous tourist area “Thamel” is called so because of this monastery . This is the only vihara of the valley, which is promoted and conserved by the Pradhan families. It is said that the Buddhist schloar Atisa Sri Dipankar constructed this monastery to develop it as a Buddhist learning center in the 12th century. It used to have place for 5,000 students in those days. This is the house of the most authentic version of Sahasra Sutra Pragyaparamita book, written in 1223 AD.
